Set against the backdrop of a fictional turbulent era, the story follows Li Xuandu, a protagonist from a commoner background. He became embroiled in the political strife between the new and old factions at a young age; after retiring into seclusion due to severe injuries, he reemerges in the jianghu (martial arts world) wielding his sword "Renjian Shi" (The Human World). Amidst the power struggles between righteous and evil forces, as well as the political intrigues in the imperial court, he seeks a path toward peace. The novel constructs a cultivation system consisting of the "Three Religions and Twelve Sects" (orthodox factions) and the "Ten Evil Sects," along with nine major cultivation realms. The narrative centers on Li Xuandu's main quest: unifying the Taoist sects and establishing the Great Xuan Dynasty. In the ending, after Li Xuandu and his wife Qin Su complete the unification of the Taoist sects, they ascend to immortality.
